• Re: Yet ANOTHER duplicate contest???

 • Yeah, I don't see any harm in duplicated contests.. Even if they are word-to-word the same, the photos submitted will be different anyway :d And like smokebird said, having duplicated contest is even good int he sense that we can improve our previous works :-) ...those of us who are here to learn, not show off though :-

 • Re: shoting drops with intersting reflections

 • Well, to help your experiments, here's some test shots: Nikon DX sensor, crop factor x1.52, nominal focal length 50 mm (=> 76 mm), at minimal focusing distance (approx. 18 cms / 7.087 inch) with an extension tube of 13 mm. Aperture was set to f/8, f/11 and f/16 respectively (cropped, but no sharpening at all) [img:p5unkg9f]http://i360.tv/ex/links/detail_DSC0855.jpg[/img:p5unkg9f] Well, not so much you can gain here. And here's the "overview" of the scene -- the battery is a AAA to give you an idea of what is possible with a 13 mm extension tube: [img:p5unkg9f]http://i360.tv/ex/links/fullframe_DSC0853.jpg[/img:p5unkg9f] Have fun…

 • dof magazine

 • Hello, Just wanted to annouce the publication of a new photography magazine, although it's not really a magazine. It's more of a media of interesting and inspiring photography works. I've published this first one under the number #0, because I wanted it to be a test trial, it only features my work for now, but the ideia is to have invited photographers and artistic photo related themes. So... have a look at this first try, and I would appreciate all kind of comments. It's just beggining, so I now it has a lot to improve, with your help, I know I can do it much faster. dof #0[/url:scrjbe4q] Thanks, Luis Monteiro

 • Re: minimum image size

 •
This is probably not the right place to post this, but a casual observation on my part is that if there was a notation at the bottom of the contests, stating preferred image size, more people would see it......... Not everyone sees every contest, and because am new here, I know I didn't realize there was a preferred size.[/quote:x4e5tjht] That is a really good idea. :-D

 • Re: Assistance required pronto!

 • Could it be a small butterfly knife :-? If im off topic please red flag :d Yes, this I'll do, Marksquirrel. Then I'll red flag myself, and get it done and over with. Read in context, the phrase must refer to a mechanical bug of some sort. The Catch 22 in this case is that the guy invents his own words and phrases, the meaning of which is known only to him, and this is why he was kind enough to be there for me, helping me whenever in doubt about something. The wise thing to do I guess is for me to make a list with all those words and phrases, then e-mail it to him, once I have finished translating the entire book. Nevertheless I wish to thank all of you, good people, for your kind assistance Jero

 • Re: Tiny suggestions: the lot here

 •
Started the topic to collect the suggestions the members might have, but do not want to mention cuz "it's not a big deal" and not exactly a BUG - well, this is the place for the tiny suggestions :d Mine for the day is: I'd like to be able to edit the text in the submitted entry without having to re-upload the image. Some members have slower connection and we all make mistakes - a possibility to edit the text hassle-free would be nice :ymblushing:[/quote:1zv9fhrt] You can, if you don't touch the browse butten your image will still be there. Used to fool me too.

 • Capturing fast motion

 • To cover fast moving objects, you should manually set your camera for fast shutter speed. A great video from Bryan Peterson covering the reasons for this is found at Youtube.[/url:1e0gv17j] With most DSLRs this should be an easy call: dial in "S" on the 'mode' wheel with Nikon, Sony Alpha and Olympus, "Tv" on Canon (that's usually called 'shutter priority'). With point and shoot gear, things are less obvious. In general, using the "sport" setting should provide the fastest shutter speed available (that's usually called a 'program' or 'mode'). In any case there has to be enough light to allow for fast shutter speed. If light gets low, you may see an error popping up in your DSLR (Nikons read 'Lo' instead of aperture in the display f.e.) and the camera might not release shutter anyway. With point and shoot gear using a program (or mode), the camera won't warn you, but instead will slow the shutter to allow for a picture, no matter what the lighting is, thus rule #1 for high speed shots is plenty of light. Flash may be of help taking shots of fast moving objects: as the speed lights fire in a very short period of time (as fast as 1/41600 of a second with a Nikon SB-800[/url:1e0gv17j]), you'll get plenty of light with an additional speed light. As light intensity falls off by the square root of the distance, you can't light big objects however. But for shooting the mandatory close up drops, speed lights are the first choice. If you're curious about the shutter speed of any shot, look up the original (out of the camera, unprocessed) shot in any picture editor (Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Lightroom, Apple Aperture, iPhoto, … or even the file details/information as provided by the operating system). But this is not going to help you at location… If you want to entirely eliminate motion blur from your pictures, be sure you understood the calculations in the previous article.

 • Hello pxlshots!!!!

 • Was just checking to see if things had gotten back to being fun here yet. I see that Nofue has completely destroyed an amazing site. What the hell is Frank doing? Does he no longer care about this site? Everyone who keeps complaining needs to realize that they can bitch all they want but actions speak louder than words. As long as you all keep posting photos you are supporting this site and nothing will ever change. Don't let Nofue get away with making it sound like all the moderators are involved with making the decisions. They aren't. He has pretty much taken over the site and moderates all of the contests and makes all of the decisions. I wish I could afford to buy this site from Frank. I would throw Nofue the hell off here and get the site back to the fun place it used to be. Thank God I found some sites that are a heck more professional than this one! Oh...and they give prizes and don't let one person ruin the fun for everyone. It's Frank's money and hard work so if he wants to let some know-it-all jerk ruin things and run off so many members so be it. Too bad they lie about the number of members here. There are over 200 accounts that have never been used and over 150 accounts that are no longer being used. There are maybe 100 - 150 current members who actually use their account. A real professional would delete accounts if they stand inactive for more than 90 days! Oh well. Back to the real photography websites!

 • Re: Optional addition to photograph submissions

 • As nice this could be, I don't think we'll get it any time soon -- there are too many open tasks for programmers with the existing site, so new features will take a while. However, feel free to post your shot's 'vital data' (once the contest has finished) in the forum. This should allow for easy migration to a step-by-step tutorial later once this option has been re-implemented. Hope this makes sense -- would be nice to see some informative SbS postings…

 • Re: Dear me! Five entries of mine scrapped this week!

 •

You obviously know the stuff well enough to have recognised it even in this transcription[/quote:s9xmjia0] Well, I sort grew up with it -- my father used to work for the marketing of the Soviet folks and every time one of those projects finished, the Soviet ambassador showed up with a pot of beluga caviar, white bread, sparkling wine and of course Stolichnaya. This was always the toughest part in those projects, and as there was always too much vodka, Stolichnaya bottles piled up in our basement -- we used the stuff to clean things and such or gave it away to business partners on x-mas :) When I grew older, I was a pleasure to help my father with that nasty duty to drink with the ambassador :)) The piling of bottles also came to an end around that time. IIRC, there were two different labels, green and red ones, but I can't remember which was better…[/quote:s9xmjia0] =)) It's kinda embarassing, but I have only seen Stolichnaya with a red label, never even heard of the green label 8-} Beluga caviar's good - with rye russian bread, yum-yum-yum!! :d

 • Re: Cannot upload to contest

 • The largest image is 2.87MB - which is well inside the size limit, so it can't be that. Images are quite large though so I just tried your suggestion of reducing the longest side to 1280... Still doesn't work. All else I can think of, is to try uploading from my only other location tomorrow - if that doesn't work I just can't think what to do... Thanks for replying and trying to help me. Oh, and it [i:2ftd7za0]is[/i:2ftd7za0] a .jpg - nothing fancy about it.

 • Re: thanks for all the fish

 • Glad you're 'up and running' again :) As for the mushroomed shot: Funky, indeed. I can understand the score -- it's pretty out of focus, especially for a still life shot. Better use f:11 for deeper depth of field, frame closer and use a tripod. Exposure seems a bit too hot -- by one stop at least. One step at a time, that's the fun of the contests here. Good luck!
