Our hand-reared orphaned pet Pukeko Inky works on his sun tan beside our pond. The Pukeko is a native new Zealand bird which resides around farm dams, ponds and in rural roadside ditches. They live in extended family groups with each member helping guard and feed the chicks and juvenile birds. The males build a communal nest and the females all lay their eggs in the one nest. They can fly in short bursts and are known for their clumsy landings accompanied by raucous screeching. Pukeko are fiercely territorial and zealously fend off any tresspassing birds. They have stunning cobolt blue and black plumage with contrasting long red legs and a large, strong beak. Their white tail feathers can be seen as they retreat. Their prehistoric looking feet are huge enabling easy passage across swamps and muddy fields. Distinguishing between the sexes is virtually impossible although the females are usually slightly larger. Inky is exceptionally tame and a true character to have around although he does have a fetish for untying shoelaces and humping unsuspecting legs.
Interesting info. Thanks
very interesting pet
Nice
I love the personality of animals. They all do their own little things to make them unique.
