Bismuth crystals form in a supercooled bismuth melt where the rapidly growing crystals make hollow forms which are known as 'hopper crystals.' The iridescent metallic colors are caused by light scattering on a thin layer of bismuth oxide which is formed when the crystals are removed from the melt and make contact with the air.
