outbackjack: the problem with this comp is that I have a whole cupboard of fascinating minerals and I am only allowed two entries (256 days ago)
kyricom: I hear ya... that's my problem too (256 days ago)
Lefa: Can you have many different rocks in one picture, or just one rock ?? Showing variety that is... (252 days ago)
kyricom: Hi Lefa, ideally, it should be one rock. The theme says to take a picture of "a" rock. (252 days ago)

Picture stone - created by outbackjack

Picture stone photo
final rank: 1 out of 30 (final score: 53.6 %)

This is a Yowah opal/picture stone. There is not much coloured opal in this stone, a bit of purple on the other side. However we liked it due to the amazing patterns. It is highly polished so it was a bit of a task to not get lighting glare.

This is a close up of a rock from Santorini island.Santorini (Greek: Σαντορίνη, pronounced [ˌsa(n)do̞ˈrini]) is a small, circular archipelago of volcanic islands located in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km southeast from Greece's mainland.Santorini is essentially what remains of an enormous volcanic explosion, destroying the earliest settlements on what was formerly a single island, and leading to the creation of the current geological caldera. Is the only caldera in the world that people actually work & live on it.

Bismuth - created by Argon

Bismuth photo
final rank: 4 out of 30 (final score: 51.1 %)

Bismuth crystals form in a supercooled bismuth melt where the rapidly growing crystals make hollow forms which are known as 'hopper crystals.' The iridescent metallic colors are caused by light scattering on a thin layer of bismuth oxide which is formed when the crystals are removed from the melt and make contact with the air.
